Our Beginnings
Swing Squad began as a spontaneous spark between five teenage friends who first crossed paths through a range of other musical projects. Though each had been playing music for a number of years, it wasn’t until they came together to explore jazz that something truly clicked. What started as a casual idea quickly turned into a shared passion, bringing them together over a love of rhythm, improvisation and the freedom that jazz offers.
The first real step was an intensive week-long practice session held between Christmas and New Year, a time that would quietly shape everything that followed. During those few days ideas flowed effortlessly, arrangements took shape and an unexpected musical chemistry emerged. By the end of the week, they already sounded like a band that had been playing together for much longer.
From there performances began to roll in, each one met with enthusiastic and positive feedback from audiences. What started as friends experimenting with sound soon evolved into a cohesive jazz ensemble driven by energy, curiosity and a shared love of the music that brought them together.
The Musicians
Sam
Saxophone | Clarinet | Flute
Our sax-slinging-Sam switches between tenor, alto, and clarinet. Known for sharp improvisation, he thrives on live jazz. Confident and unpredictable, he never plays the same solo twice and drives creativity in every performance.
James
Drumkit | Percussion | Piano
James is one of our passionate drummers, the band’s rhythmic backbone who never misses a beat. Full of enthusiasm, charisma, and cheeky energy, he keeps things lively, adding unexpected flourishes and surprise moments that keep everyone on their toes.
Reuben
Trumpet
Reuben is the quietest member of the band until he suddenly isn’t, becoming one of the loudest voices. He produces strong, warm tones adding a richness and depth to the group. As one of our trumpet twins, Reuben shows music runs in the family.
Jack
Drum kit | Percussion
Jack is the extroverted drummer who brings explosive energy to every performance. Loud, charismatic, and impossible to ignore, he drives the band forward with power and flair. Offstage, his big personality fills every room with humour, stories, and effortless enthusiasm.
Arthur
Trumpet
Arthur is one half of Swing Squad’s trumpet duo, known for his raspy tone and confident solos. He plays alongside his twin brother, always pushing him competitively. He dreams of owning a flugelhorn and is also learning trombone.
Dougie
Percussion
Dougie is one of the youngest members of the band and a relative newcomer, bringing plenty of enthusiasm as he gets started with us. Primarily a percussionist, he’s already showing interest in expanding his skills by picking up other instruments over time.
